School Watch Certina/ESA Chronolympic, valjoux 728, year 1971
Beautiful and extremely rare school watch Ebauches SA Chronolympic Regatta.
This school watch is based on one of the most iconic regatta chronographs of the early 1970s: a model developed by Ebauches SA and later commercialized by Certina as the Certina Chronolympic Regatta.
Ebauches SA(ESA) was a Swiss company founded in Neuchâtel on December 27, 1926, specializing in the design and production of Swiss movements, including Valjoux and Venus calibers, as well as the development of prototypes and technical concepts for various watch brands. In 1985, Ebauches SA became ETA SA Fabrique d’Ebauches.
The original watch that inspired this model was powered by the column-wheel Valjoux 728 movement, notable for being the first regatta chronograph movement with the minute counter positioned centrally. It is considered one of the rarest Valjoux calibers, produced in a limited series for only one year, in 1971.
During this period, this distinctive regatta chronograph design was commercialized by Certina under the name Certina Chronolympic Regatta.
Dial: A vibrant multi-color dial with unique graphic elements, featuring a tachymeter scale and regatta indicator. The layered design includes shades of navy, red, cream, and blue, with contrasting orange and turquoise accents on the hands.
The center-mounted regatta countdown display and chronograph-inspired layout are designed specifically for sailing competitions. The dial also features an hour counter at 6 o'clock and a tachymeter scale for speed measurement, making it a multi-purpose tool for sports and navigation.
Case: Brushed stainless steel case. The size excluding the crown is 40 x 44 mm, providing a strong and balanced presence on the wrist.
The overall design faithfully captures the spirit of the original Ebauches SA / Certina Chronolympic Regatta, making this school watch both an unusual collector’s piece and an attractive tribute to one of the most innovative regatta chronographs ever produced.
